Quite often, photographers want to have the same questions answered. Here are more common questions that new snappers like to ask.
I see cameras being sold for cheap online, but can I trust them?
Some online stores offer a fantastic bargain and are trustworthy. Online stores have less overheads then a convention store so can offer good bargains. However, the price of a camera is high so you need to be sure that you are using an honest retailer.
If you can use the biggest stores with a good reputation, like Amazon.com, Dabs.com etc. This will depend on what country you are from, but you will have generally heard of the biggest sites. Some sites may have retail stores too, so this is an added guarantee as you should be able to return the item to your local store.
Look for reviews; look for feedback from friends and from other customers. Be aware though that this information can be forged if necessary so recommendations are the best way to go.
You can buy a camera from abroad if it is cheaper but remember that it means that the instructions will be in a foreign language and it will be harder getting it repaired.
Beware of –
High shipping charges (always check before you buy).
Customs fees (check with your own customs to see how much you would have to pay)
Cameras from the gray market (not made for your country) – this can cause problems if you find a fault with the item but the local head office won’t repair it for you because it’s technically made for another country.
Compatibility - you will require plug converters if you are buying from the other end of the world.
All those things said, plenty of people buy from abroad and are happy with their products. If you are not confident enough, then it could be better going to the high street because you can feel the camera and try things out first. Some places may offer you a price match so you can take a price you found online and see if they will give you the same amount of discount.
I bought my camera from abroad/second hand, where can I get a manual in my language?
Luckily, you can get the manuals online for free from the manufacturer, generally, if the camera was made in the last 10 years but this varies from company to company. If yours is a very old manual camera then try auction sites like eBay, or try emailing the company to see if they have any to sell to you, or join a dedicated forum as someone there may have the manual or will be willing to photocopy it for you.
Also these days you can find people who are experts on all kinds of camera online. Join a group for your camera and you will be surprised how helpful people are.
