Other times you may be hired by a company to take photosets for press events or even conferences.  These are situations that tend to be a little more spontaneous than most you will need to be able to get some great shots under pressure and with lots of people around you.
PR Events

Sometimes a company will have a press event that will require a professional photographer.  This includes things, such as product or new service launches, or when a company is celebrating success or something like a merger.

Press events can be held in an office or at an external venue such as a restaurant, a theatre, a hall and so on.  You may have time to look around beforehand but you may not be able to gauge what the lighting will be like because sometimes the décor and lighting will change once the part actually starts.

This means that you need to be able to deal with any lighting conditions.  Use your camera and carry handy accessories with you such as a flashgun in case of dull lighting – this is very important.

At the same time, you also need to be lightweight and be able to move around because most of the time, PR events have lots of different people coming and going so you need to move around to get shots of all the guests.

Conferences

Conferences tend to be held outside of the company’s offices at big venues.  They can be special events or training events for example for the staff.  Sometimes a company may hire in an external speaker or sometimes it’s one company going to see how another company is performing.

Conferences tend to have fixed time for speaking and sharing information so as a photographer, you have to follow the days’ schedule without getting in the way too much.

Speakers are often a key focal point so you need a camera which can deal with low light conditions and a sharp lens so that you can avoid using distracting flash wherever possible.

Outdoors

More and more companies are requesting outdoor photography because this gives a fresher, more modern feel to the usual cooperate images.  Usually the models are still dressed very smartly but they are similar or posing is more casual ways.

In this situation make sure you have decent weather that day and use extra lights if necessary to keep everything bright.  Remember that you can be creative but this is still a business image so keep everything slick and not too over posed- no stupid facial expressions and no distracting poses that are usually reserved for the likes of models.

Instead make the clients look relaxed but professional and in control – you can have your model seated or standing up as long as it looks polished.
