Taking photographs of architecture and architectural elements can be stylistically challenging for photographers of all skill levels but if done with the proper considerations can create visually stunning images. There are many factors to consider when setting up an image of an architectural element but two of the most crucial are angle and context. Angles can be used to draw in a viewer’s eye and also to add visual depth to otherwise static scenes. Context is also very important to consider when taking images of architectural elements as they can give point of view to otherwise routine scenes.
You should consider angles carefully when photographing architecture. Angles can be used with many different types of architectural scenes to create dynamic images. For example, try photographing a staircase or banister from an angle that maximizes shadows to create more depth in the image than the static staircase image. By experimenting with angles you can also set the mood of an image. A graveyard scene taken straight on would have fewer moods than an image that was angled to include additional grave markers, a drooping tree, or barren road. But some architectural elements are well suited for straight on shots. Doors and windows are often shot without angles as it helps to capture the details of these elements. Smaller architectural details such as sconces are also well captured without angles.
Context can help create much needed depth to architectural images. These images frequently fail to impart the full scope of a scene because the architecture itself is too highly favored in the scene, leaving out important elements which can add perspective and meaning. For example, compare a photo of only a barn with a photo of a barn that includes a nearby tractor, stable, and lone farmer and the second image is much more complex and visually engaging. Architectural photography is important as it preserves historical structures. Both angle and context should be considered as they can help to accurately portray these compelling elements with more story like images.
