Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO

How exposure elements work together

How exposure elements work together - By Lázaro Gimena

The three-legged stool of a properly exposed photograph is built upon a combination of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

When I say “properly exposed” I don’t necessarily mean the technically optimum exposure; the exposure that gives you a nice, even histogram with solid peaks in the midtone range. Because, frequently, the “proper” exposure in a photo is nothing like the technically accurate one. A determination of what’s proper can only be made by the photographer, not the camera.

Boudoir photography is a challenge both in terms of lighting and location - By Constantin Barbu

Boudoir photography was invented about 15 minutes after the first photographic process was perfected. Once they figured out it worked, they were out looking for some gal to take her clothes off.

Since then boudoir photography has risen and fallen in popularity in harmony with social acceptance. Lately it’s been making a comeback.

Getting Started In The Photography Business

photogs on a tfp shoot

It's not unusual for several photographers to work a TFP shoot together

The question I get more than any other is, “How do I get started in photography?” There are a lot of ways to get started in the business, but step one is being able to take amazing pictures. Not merely good, but so good they wow people.

Everyone with a high end digital camera thinks they can be a photographer. In the business we call them “Uncle Bob”. Uncle Bob usually comes up in price negotiations for a wedding photographer. Why should we pay your cost when my Uncle Bob can do it for free? It’s a bluff. If Uncle Bob was that good, he’d be doing it for a living.

The central issue remains how you set yourself apart from the Uncle Bobs of the world and gain the experience you’ll need to set yourself apart as worth the money.

Photoshop Users Chaff At Photoshop Upgrade Change

Photoshop users side-swiped by Adobe upgrade pricing

After tempting FCP users to switch to Premiere Pro CS5 with steep discounts, Adobe decided to take a bite out of their loyal Photoshop user base.

Users who decide to skip one or two releases and upgrade later will find themselves shut out of upgrade pricing. Unless you’re running Photoshop CS5 or CS5.5, the best Adobe will do for you is a 20 percent discount, and that only until December.

Understanding Depth of Field

Depth of field is not a wall, it's a gradient of focus - by Ligar

Understanding Depth of Field, or DoF is a topic that is actually more complicated that it seems on the surface. The theory is simple: When you focus on an object, there is a distance on either side that will be in focus. How much area is in focus depends on the f-stop of your lens.

Simple, right? That’s the easy part, after that it gets tricky. Turns out that DoF is more like a gradient than a wall. The fall off in clarity happens gradually and the actual DoF distance is more of an estimate.

The exact distance is based on observation. Specifically the point at which you will notice a difference of a point on a standard 8×10 photo viewed from a distance of one foot. The area of fuzziness around a particular point even has a name, it’s called the “circle of confusion” or the “blur spot”.

Golden hour was the opportune time to catch this shot

Golden hour is one of those topics where still photos and video intersect. If you’ve ever spent time on a movie set late in the day, there will be one person fretting about losing the light every moment they’re not recording. That person is the Director of Photography or DP, the person responsible for the overall look of the film. They’re not worried it getting dark, they’re concerned about losing the best light of the day. That fantastic light occurs twice a day, early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

When Do I Need a Model Release?

Model releases are a routine part of fashion photography - Yuki Chiu By Guy K.T.Hea

One of the biggest areas of confusion I run into as a photographer is when model releases are necessary. There is a lot of misinformation out there and quite a few people willing to make up the rules to fit their preference at the time.

First, a disclaimer. This is not intended to be legal advice, which you get from a real lawyer, this is my current understanding. Laws and legal requirements also vary by country, so things may be different where you live.
