Black and white images look classic and timeless; no wonder so many people choose to take photographs or convert them mono.  Without the distraction of color, black and white images transcend time.  Some images translate better when in mono than ohers, like those with stronger contrasts between white/black, dark/light, highlight/shadow.  In the past, the best black and white photographs were achived with a ‘wet’ darkroom but now, we can print these images at home using a PC.

In any photography club, magazine, book or even when a few photographers are just talking, you will hear references to high and low key black and white pictures.  These buzz words are bandied about by even those who do not really know what they mean. For most people the words high and low in this context mean the degree of brightness (or harshness) of the lighting used. Yes, lighting does play a role but high and low key photographs and much more than the lighting effect.

When cameras were first invented it was only possible to take black and white images, nowadays however color photos are all the norm. You might think that this would mean nobody will bother taking black and white photos anymore because they are obsolete.

This however isn’t the case. There’s something very special about black and white photos, putting your digital camera into its black and white mode can produce some unique and interesting results.
